What is STS OnLine?
The STS-CS (Substitute Teacher Service
-
Call Slip) OnLine System is an application for
substitute assignment management written in the Java computing
environment.
In order to use the STS-CS application, your computer will need to
be running a reasonably current version of the Java Runtime Environment
from Sun or Apple,
as described below.
Installation Instructions:
Please proceed through this document in a sequential manner, or use
one of the following links to jump to the section you require:
- System Requirements

- Installing or Updating Java

System Requirements: Last changed 23 April 2007 |
- A high-speed Internet connection, such as T1, DSL, Cable, or
FiOS.
Note: Dial-up users (56K or less) will
experience longer than usual wait times and connection time-outs and/or
failures. The system will run, but may operate at excrutiatingly
slow speeds.
- Java Runtime Environment
(JRE) version 1.4.2, or better, from Sun
or Apple. 4/23/07 PLEASE NOTE: We have had
issues reported when using Java Version 6. We are working to correct
the issues. You can revert back to Java Version 5 by following step 3
at the top of this page.
Note: Apple has recently taken over
management of Sun's Java software for the Macintosh computer
systems. They have, so far, kept the version numbers the same.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or better (for pdf-type help and
tutorial files).
- Any computer capable of running the Java Runtime Environment
(JRE) from either Sun or Apple, including, but not limited to,
Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, Unix, Linux, or Solaris.
Note: The Microsoft Corporation no longer
supports certain versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system,
including Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows ME.
Therefore, STS does not guarantee our application will function
properly or securely on those platforms, although we make every effort
to ensure our applications operate independently of operating system
flaws wherever possible.
In addition, although Microsoft support for Windows NT 4.0 ended 30
June 2003, and for Windows 2000 Professional on 31 March 2005, the "NT"
series of Windows systems are far more stable than the "9x" versions,
and so STS will continue to fully support our applications running on
those systems. Please check the Microsoft
website and Microsoft's Life-Cycle
Policy for more information.
Important: Please be sure to read and follow all
download instructions carefully before proceeding from any point.
It is important to ensure that you are installing the correct version
of Java for your operating system!

Installing or Updating Java: Last changed 30 November 2006 |
Please follow the instructions below for your system:
Windows-only, Internet Explorer-only:
Automated install, follow the on-screen instructions on the Download
Page.
Download Page: www.java.com
Size: 7-10MB
Unix, Linux, Solaris, and Windows
non-Explorer (e.g., FireFox,
Mozilla, or Opera):
Click the "Download" button next to your operating system.
Instructions are next to the download links on the Download Page.
Download Page: www.java.com
Size: Average 15 MB, Windows 7-10 MB
Macintosh -- Apple Mac OS X, 10.4.2 or later (Tiger):
On the Download Page, click the "34 MB" link in the "Download Details"
box on the right.
For an update description, click the "for detailed information" link on
the left in the Download Page.
Download Page: www.apple.com
Size: 34 MB
Note: For Apple, there seems to be no way
to just install a runtime version. What you get is the full
developer version, which is why it's so big. This should in no
way affect the operation of Java or STS-CS.
Note: The above will install new OR update
an existing Java installation. Some version of Java should already
be installed in OS X! Please check the version you have installed
first (see your System Administrator for instructions on how to do
that).
Macintosh -- Apple Mac OS 9:
The Apple website has not made it easy to
update Java on old OS versions. Please contact your local
Substitute Teacher Service support staff for assistance.
If you encounter problems installing, updating, or running Java, please
contact your system administrator.

Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader:
Last changed 30 November 2006 |
Please read
all of these instructions (or print them out)
before
doing them.
- Go to www.adobe.com.
- Choose Your operating system, version, and language, then hit the
Continue button.
- For Unix or Linux, Please consult with your system
administrator for general installation
procedures. Then, choose the latest version of of the Reader and
hit the Download button.
- For Microsoft Windows, consider the following:
- You should uncheck the "Adobe Yahoo! Toolbar" and
"Adobe Photoshop" products before you hit
the Download button, unless you truly want them.
There are links next to those items for more information if you would
like help deciding. There may also be policies in your
organization regarding those items... please consult with your system
administrator.
- You may download the latest version if you like, but earlier
versions are less bloated, and STS-CS
only requires version 5.0 or higher. The vast majority of PDF
documents on the Web only require version 5.0 to view properly.
- If you want version 5.0 or 5.0.x, and you do not see it on
the Adobe website, you may get a copy
at oldversion.com.
Scroll down until
you see version 5.0.5 (better than just 5.0).
- Once you have downloaded the version you want, you should be
able to run the downloaded program and follow the iinstallation
instructions given to you then.
- Except for Microsoft Windows, Unix, or Linux, just choose
the latest version of of the Reader, hit the Download button,
and follow subsequent instructions.
If you encounter problems installing, updating, or running the Adobe
Reader, please contact your system administrator.

Downloading and Running STS-CS. Last changed 30 November 2006 |
Once you have updated your computer with the
Java
software,
have your
registration code,
and read the appropriate
manual,
you are ready to download and use the STS-CS application.
Please note: these instructions will not work
if Java
is not loaded on your PC!
If you encounter problems running this application, please
contact the STS system administrator at 800-357-7827 Ext. 250.
To Install:
- To begin the download and/or run the application, click here.
- One of two things will happen when you click the above...
- A "download or execute" dialog will appear. In this
case, choose to execute the application.
- A download-only dialog will appear. In this case...
- Download the file to your desktop.
- Double-click the downloaded file (on your desktop).
- Continue with the instructions below. After STS-CS
is running, you may (and should) delete the downloaded file from your
desktop (it will be of type JNLP).
- When asked if you want a desktop icon, answer yes. If you
choose no, you will need to come to this page each time to run the
application using the link above.
- You will be presented with a security certificate dialog after
STS-CS downloads.
- If this dialog gives you the option of installing the
certificate,
you should do so. This will prevent a warning from being displayed
each time the application is run.
- Otherwise, simply accept the certificate.
- You will see a splash screen, and eventually be presented with a
login form.
Follow your previous instructions.
- Once logged in, a light gray area will appear. This gray
area may only last for a few seconds before the full application
appears, or it may last for some time. Please be patient, the
application should appear once data from STS servers has been
downloaded.
Note: Performance at this stage depends
heavily on network
issues. If there are
connection or performance problems, please contact the STS system
administrator at 800-357-7827 Ext. 250.
